Time Taken to Make a Dress: ORI accessories private launch

It's been a year since Time Taken to Make a Dress' previous collection, and we were really excited when they invited us to the private launch of their latest accessories collection. This marks their foray into  accessories; lovingly handmade by none other than the TTMD designers themselves.

Their venture into designing and crafting accessories arose when they received clients' requests for more versatile and affordable pieces which can be worn on every occasion unlike dresses which are usually tailored for a special occasion and steeply priced.

The collection, ORI, is inspired by Japanese origami. A series of manipulated fabrics such as silk and chartreuse, transformed by intricate folding techniques, make the accessories delicate and feminine.

The launch, held at their studio, was a small and cosy private affair. A spread of yummy finger food for guests was also thoughtfully prepared by the designers, Jade and Letitia.

Love the very organised workspace.

We managed to coax Jade (left) and Letitia (right) who were very camera shy into taking a photo. Thank you!

The ORI collection will be on exhibition from now till 20 August 2011. If you're keen to view the pieces, head down to Time Taken to Make a Dress at 61 Niven Road. Visit www.timetakentomakedress.com for more information.

Breakfast at Topshop

In 1961, there was Breakfast at Tiffany's. Fast forward 50 years to 2011, and we have Breakfast at Topshop. Topshop has perhaps become another haven where many ladies spend their time, wandering through aisles of covetable clothes, bags, shoes and accessories.

On Saturday, Fir and myself had a chance to do this first thing in the morning. And no, we did not spend it peering through the shop windows, eyeing the pieces on the mannequins with envy, Audrey Hepburn style. Instead, we were invited to the Topshop Personal Shopper Breakfast Event.

The highlights of the event included a short talk by Anny Lin, Personal Shopper at Topshop Knightsbridge. She took guests through the latest trends and collections in Topshop this Spring/ Summer. There was also a guest appearance by style maven, Ginette Chittick, who gave us her insights on what her style is all about. It was definitely inspiring to see her in the flesh and to get a better sense of her style. Unfortunately, we were stuck at the back of the crowd and could not get a better view!

Accompanying the talk was breakfast which came in the form of pastries, scones, fruit tarts as well as very delectable trays of chocolates. And of course, there's no better way to start a morning than having a nice cuppa coffee while checking out the latest pieces that have hit the shelves of Topshop Knightsbridge.

Of course, no fashion event is without its share of fashionable people. Here are a few of my choice picks.

Fir's friend, Gen, doing some shopping!

And who can forget Topshop's Personal Shoppers who can help you transform your wardrobe from drab to fab? We managed to get a shot of Anny in her outfit here, and if her outfit isn't proof enough of great fashion sense, we strongly suggest you make an appointment at Topshop Knightsbridge with her!

Thank you Topshop for the invitation to this great event! We definitely had a good time!

Golden Globes 2011 Red Carpet Report

I am a sucker for evening gowns. So you can imagine the thrill I had watching the Golden Globes 2011 on TV today. After watching the event, I just thought I had to share with you what some of the lovely ladies wore to the event.

The red carpet was awash with a multitude of colors, but the most prominent one was scarlet. A whole spectrum, from bright hot red, hot pink to blushing pink, many actresses were clad in this hue.

I can't decide which of the scarlet dresses I like the best, but I think it's a toss up between Claire Danes' Calvin Klein number and Julianne Moore' Lanvin one.

Another striking color that was seen on two of Hollywood's heavyweights, Angelina Jolie and Catherine Zeta Jones, was a lovely shade of emerald green.

Most actresses seemed to favor a more sophisticated but conservative look, choosing to cover their arms in long sleeves. Necklines remained safe with boatneck collars and hemlines only ended at the ground.

Another group of actresses veered the other way, opting for a more muted palette of nude and earth tones.

Others, like Jennifer Lopez and Megan Fox opted for a more ethereal look. Of course, they still managed to look glamorous with a little help from the 'bling' that was piled onto their dresses.

My favorites of the night? January Jones looking nothing short of a blonde bombshell in the sexy tangerine coloured dress from Versace.

Then of course there's Tilda Swinton in Jil Sander. Commendable for her bold choice, choosing a minimalistic and sleek shirt dress, or should I say shirt gown, that makes her look effortlessly cool.

Last but not least, rising starlet Olivia Wilde puts every Disney Princess to shame in her gorgeous, drool-worthy gown from Marchesa. I think her dress really stole the night. Oh and did I mention that I would die to be in this gown?

I hope you managed to catch the Golden Globes 2011, but if you didn't, there's still the Oscars to look forward to!

Valentino Retrospective Exhibition in Singapore

I had a chance to get upclose and personal with 100 of Valentino's wearable works of art on exhibition at the Resorts World Sentosa last Sunday and the pieces did not fail to take my breath away.

The works on exhibition definitely revealed Valentino's trademark of female sophistication and exemplified how he constantly brings out the beauty in a woman. What I loved most though, was his attention to details - From mixing fabrics to using embroidery, there was always something special in every Valentino piece that made it stand out.

My favorite dress of all, was this haute couture piece which I would wear in a heartbeat. Named the tattoo dress or “oiseaux de nuit”, this dress in Chantilly lace, feathers and 'lave' really speaks volumes about Valentino's slavish attention to details.

The exhibition also revolves around particular themes that unites Valentino's design approach over the past 50 years, such as, geometric patterns and graphic prints, volume, pleats and ruffles, animalia, flowers, and the 3 distinctive colours that have embodied Valentino namely, white, black and the 'Valentino' red.

Anyway, I'm terribly sorry for the lack of pictures, but I have two very valid reasons for this, the first being that photo-taking was not allowed and there were security guards stationed all over the exhibition, ready to stop people from whipping out their cameras and snapping away. The second being that photos really don't do these works of art justice because you have to see them in reality to appreciate just how beautiful they are. Trust me, you won't be disappointed.

The Valentino Retrospective Exhibition is held at Resorts World Sentosa from 22 December 2010 to 13 February 2011 and tickets can be purchased from Sistic or at Resorts World Sentosa ticketing counter.
