Issey Miyake Pleats Please and Bao Bao

Rejoice all Issey Miyake fans! The Issey Miyake Pleats Please and Issey Miyake Bao Bao standalone store is finally here in Singapore.

Issey Miyake Pleats Please, for those unfamiliar with the line, is positioned to embody one of the most fundamental concepts of Issey Miyake – integrating design with the everyday life and comfort of the wearer. This is clearly demonstrated in the development and evolution of traditional techniques of processing and of pleating material into a highly functional modern product - light in weight and easy to wear and handle, just slip on and slip off, no zips or buttons required. This revolutionary concept is truly an ingenious fusion of creation, technology and business.

The Bao Bao bag, which has already made its debut in Singapore much earlier, is both light and soft, transforming itself after handling to create dramatic new shapes (I like to think of it as a cloth rubix cube. The bags feature a flexible functionality perfect for busy modern lifestyles and are an architectural beauty.

While I never really was a fan of Issey Miyake’s avant garde designs, I visited the opening of Issey Miyake Pleats Please and Issey Miyake Bao Bao and had a change of heart. Avant garde designers often focus on aesthetics more than anything; designing clothes which are sometimes hardly wearable. Issey Miyake, on the contrary focuses on the wearer, comfort and functionality.

Issey Miyake is truly a genius in fusing fashion and technology and I’m a convert.

Visit Issey Miyake Pleats Please and Issey Miyake Bao Bao at Forum Shopping Mall, 01-28.
